Chihiro acting as a 10-yr old bored kid

Jonathan Ross is sort of a connaisseur of Japanese flicks, or at least he poses as such in his, not very unknown to the Och audience, documentary Asian Invasion. In his chapter on Japanese anime, Jonathan pays special attention to the works of Hayao Miyazaki. Even more attention paying Ochers may remember him as the director of Mononoke-Hime (1997), an Och’s Weekend Movie featured in our cinema last year’s summer. So on Jonathan’s advise and Och’s request we present another Miyazaki flick as this week’s Och’s Weekend Movie: Spirited Away (2001).

Och’s Weekend Movie: Le Mystère Anquetil

July 22nd, 2007 by ikiro

Jacques et JanineYesterday’s time trial around Albi is a fine example that to succeed in la Grande Boucle, that you’ll have to stay on your bike in the first week, that you’ll have to stay close with the competition over the first mountains (Pyrénées or Alpes), and that you’ll have to hammer down your opponents in the race contre-la-montre. Le Mystère Anquetil (1997) is about the man who turned time trialling into an art form: Jacques Monsieur Chrono Anquetil (1934-1987).

Och’s Weekend Movie: Jour De Fête

July 6th, 2007 by ikiro

Jacques Tati dans 'Jour de Fête' (1949)In Jour de Fête (1949), Jacques Tati plays François, a postman who delivers the mail around a small village in the center of France. We follow François on his delivery round on his pignon fixe while the other townies prepare for some upcoming festivities. In the evening, François watches a film showing how the US postal services ride motorbikes through flaming rings and use helicopters to deliver mail in a highly efficient fashion. Or at least, that is what François has been told. The next morning, he decides to modernize his delivery techniques according to the lessons learned: rapidité, rapidité. What follows is a great lesson in hilarious bike handling skills and an efficient mail delivery procedure that the Apostle of the American Gospel of Efficiency only could have dreamed of. Check out Tativille for more on Jacques Tati, or go see Mon Oncle at the Plaza Futura on July 10.
