Time for some awards. While most awards are about what people write or dumped on their sijt, there’s actually also some awards for their well trusted backbone/platform and online services which aren’t as much mentioned.
Well, yesterday for the first time the first Dutch web awards for the next wave of webservices and tools, aka web 2.0, were handed out: Web 2.0 awards.
The presentation was done in a very cozy and beautiful room. Even a mac on the toilet! I enjoyed the event, congratulate the winners and are looking forward to next years event. More photos and reviews here and here.

Traditionally every music year starts with the Noorderslagweekend in Grunn’. Starting at thursday and friday (pdf-alerts) with the Eurosonic-festival and the saturday Noorderslag itself. While Noorderslag is an all dutch-party, Eurosonic is a showcase festival for the new lightning of musicians from Europe. The ideal place to check what will be hot (or not) this year!
During Eurosonic in every lousy bar with a stage there are performances. In total more than 100 bands made their waiting in two days. So it is very important to prepare yourself and to plan a route in advance (including backups). Otherwise your ending up in queues and missing that essential gig. Below a report of the route yours trully has followed. Do you want a complete coverage of the Noorderslag Weekend? Check out the 3voor12 site!

Where The Wild Things Are“.
The way I look at it now 2007 might be heralding the return of good old traditional Death Metal. Not those snot nosed imitation bands that we have been coping with all these years… No, new bands by veterans from the old scene and people that actually care to remember how this all started, excreting sounds based on music by Death, Autopsy, Repulsion, Nihilist, Possessed etc. etc.

Vyvienne Long – Birdtalk EP
I’ve mentioned her before in a tunesday-post, and I’m mentioning her again. Bass player for Damien Rice released a solo EP containing 5 lovely songs from which 2 are covers. And still, if her to-be debut album is anything like the 3 songs she wrote herself, I’d totally buy it.
Score: 11/14 Preview and Bonus!
Klaxons – Xan Valley EP
Another EP! These guys forced NME into labeling them with a new genre. Extremely young “new ravers” are the Next Best Myspace Hype and already rocked everybody’s socks @ London Calling this year. How they sound? “Like when Buzz Aldrin returned from the moon and turned Muslim”. I’m not sure yet. Score: 12/14 Preview
The Fratellis – Costello Music
It seems ages ago Arctic Monkeys crashed onto the scene, and Franz Ferdinand must have been something from last century. Anyhow, the British invasion of the popscene seems neverending. The Fratellis are next in line and, oh! how they deliver. It doesn’t get catchier and pubfriendlier than this.
Score: 10/14 Preview
Damien Rice – 9
I’ve tried to get around this album, because it would never be able top his debut “O”. And I still think so. But everytime I listen to it, it gets closer. It sounds the same on first glance, but things definitely evolved. “Just as delicate” became “Fuck you!”. But it’s still great. Worthy follow-up.
Score: 12/14 Preview
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly – The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager Talented English youngster combines guitar with a wide range of samples. Result: Fairly nice combination of Death Cab For Cutie lyrics brought with teen pop sensation Panic! At The Disco polished freshness, bleeps and tingles (not a bad thing!). Also props for the coolest band name of 2006. Score: 09/14 Preview
As a species we humans are easily recognisable. Barring a few other types of monkeys we’re the only creature on the planet that uses tools. After years of baking shit in plastic pans made of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) I had this one question. How did all my ancestors bake eggs when they clearly didn’t have the power of Teflon®? Did all their eggs stick to the pan? OMFG, how did we manage to survive this ellende?
