Lowlands is also a festival were you have to choose between bands. Unfortunately the organisation has stuffed the sunday full of interesting bands, so I have to skip on forehand a few bands. One band high on my “to see list” in advance was Rotfront, but they are playing while NIN and Sonic Youth hit the stage, so bad luck.
Rotfront is founded by a.o. Yuriy Gurzhy, better known of Russendisko fame (czech out the Lima venue @ saturday from 22:00 till death, for the Balkan Beatz session). This band delivers one hell of a party on stage and beyond. They are merely a live band, but luckily a few tracks are floating the internetz. Ofcourse on their MySpace and in the ruling Ochstream you can find the Roboter track.
Rotfront will play on Sunday the 19th around 17.45 at the Lima

Funk, soul, and R&B galore from the seventies and eighties.
(MonkeyBalls-protocol alert)
Have to make this pots about a marvelous band called Arcade Fire. I discovered them on Fabchannel, Never heard of this band before and watched the whole concert in one fap, I was sold. If I would be on Lowlands this year you definitely find me in the Alpha tent when they are playing. “Arcade Fire is known for its enthralling live performances, as well as its use of a large number of musical instruments.” as noted on there wiki page.
A must see. Best musical act from Canada after Céline Dion. Okay I am joking but check it out yourself what the can do in an elevator or on Rock en Seine. And here is a live song on Jools Holland from there genius first album.
Arcade Fire will play on Sunday the 19th around 20.00 at the Alpha-tent
TEN! As written before on Och, Dinosaur Jr. got reunited last year and made an excellent album called ‘Beyond’. Their sound didn’t change too much through the years and I would like to hurrah for that, because their sound is still higly dominated by John Mascis’ overdriven guitar exploits full of feedback, distortion and dissonance completed with Mascis’ and Lou Barlow’s tormented voices. Their sound is often compared to the more grungey side of Neil Young and Sonic Youth (they will also perform on this years edition of Lowlands by the way, w0000t!). But Dinosaur Jr. are the ones I’m probably most curious for. And let’s just hope that I’m completely wrong, but I’m afraid they made an incomprehensible mistake in the Lowlands final programming on Sunday evening.
Isn’t the India-tent way too small to fit in all those people who want to see them play live finally?
I guess it’ll be camping in front of the stage one hour before, to make sure you’ll be able to take a glimpse from that massive, sonic assault.
Their third album ‘Bug‘ is considered one of the best.
Compilation album ‘Fossils’ is still up here.
Dinosaur Jr. will play on Sunday 19th Aug 22.00 at the India-tent
The band that has seen and done it all. Those old rocking fart knockers… Lemmy and the boys. It struck me as quite a surprise that they had been booked for lowlands. Then again their lastest album ‘Kiss Of Death’ was sort of a nice surprise to me too. I leave you with a pre-taster for Motörhead live. A classic recording from 1978. Maybe not entirely representative of what they are today but nonetheless extremely enjoyable. And incidently one of the first Motörhead recordings I ever owned.. Get it here
Motörhead will play on Sunday the 19th around 19.00 at the Grolsch-tent
Weird music galore with this guy from France, Labyala Nosfell. This act – probably the strangest you’ll see at Lowlands this year – made two albums up till now: ‘Pomaïe Klokochazia Balek’ (2005) and ‘Kälin Bla Lemsnit Dünfel Labyanit’ (2006). These titles aren’t that strange once you know that Nosfell claims to be an inhabitant of the planet Klokochazia and he therefore mainly speaks their language Klokobetz and a little bit of English and French.
His music is hardly to describe, but if we have to try and label it, let’s make it avantgarde pop. He uses his voice in an extreme way, plays guitar, samples, dances, does some incredible beatboxing and mixes all kinda music-styles up to one complete new: Nosfell-stylee. On stage he’s always accompanied with Pierre Le Bourgeois, a French cello player. You have to see, hear and feel it to believe it.
Curious? Check these 4 tracks (Gouz Mandamaz, Mindala Jinka, Shaunipul and Smoke) by Labyala Nosfell.
And to all those lovers of French female singers, check this live performance of Hallelujah by Nosfell & Jane Birkin at YouTube.
Nosfell will play on Saturday 18th Aug 19.15 at the Lima-tent
What to do when Eagles of Death Metal and Hayseed Dixie have the same timeslot at a festival? Here’s what to do.
To make the right decision you should ask yourself a few plain and simple but very essential questions, such as:
1. Do I take music way too serious?
2. Am I very thirsty?
3. Do I like bluegrass, metal and incidental yodels?
4. Do I have an agricultural background?
5. Am I addicted to covers?
6. Do I like to play the air-banjo?
7. Do I have to admit that I’m a hillbilly-lover?
8. Am I still very thirsty?
When you only answered ‘YES’ on the first question, you’ll probably better off in the Grolsch with Eagles of Death Metal. But when you answered ‘YES’ on all the questions except the first one: Congratulations! No doubt you’re the perfect audience for these four insane dixie-yanks!
But in case you still aren’t completely sure whether you’re making the right decision, you could do an extra check by listening to their album from 2003 ‘Kiss My Grass: A Hillbilly Tribute to KISS’ which contains only KISS covers. That’ll do the job.
Hayseed Dixie will play on Friday 17th Aug 19.30 at the Lima-tent
I won’t waste too much space on Och with saying what you already know. GO SEE TURBONEGRO ON LOWLANDS! The torrents in my older topics about them are still doing okay on Demonoid. Remember that these two torrents contain their essential albums! Remember Turbonegro is top glampunkhardrock entertainment don’t forget to throw some beer! And don’t forget Turbonegro is an Och favourite
Turbonegro will play on Saturday the 18th around 16.50 at the Grolsch-tent
Fifth! French techno pioneer Laurent Garnier.
Gladfully Tony Wilson’s funeral isn’t next Saturday at 18.15, because then Mr. Garnier probably would have been there to honour the man who gave him the opportunity to perform at his (in)famous Haçienda Club in Manchester instead of DJ-ing at the Lowlands festival.
Garnier is active in the techno/dance scene for quiet a long time. Started off in the late eighties, he is still going strong with innovating new productions at this very moment. This year he released ‘Public Outburst’, a compilation of the shows he did with keyboard players Benjamin Rippert and Bugge Wesseltoft and saxophone player Philippe Nadaud.
The last time I saw the ambassador of techno play live he had just released the unresistable jazz-influenced ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’ (2000), of which some say that it’s (together with ‘The Cloud Making Machine’ from 2005) his masterpiece. I’m not sure about that, but fact is that it’s a very divers and personal statement of Garnier’s electronic music which sure had a huge impact.
Let’s see what the man is up to at his Lowlands-set.
Check ‘The Man With The Red Face‘ from a concert at Pont du Gard, Paris with Bugge Wesseltoft on the piano. Like to hear that song in it’s original studio-version? Check the ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’ over here. Enjoy.
Laurent Garnier will play on Saturday 18th Aug 18.15 at the Bravo-tent
