50-Word Reviews V

March 31st, 2008 by JayJay

R.E.M. - AccelerateR.E.M. – Accelerate Face it, R.E.M. have been boring us with a lot of pointless junk the last one-and-a-half decade. So what do you do if you’ve lost momentum? You become that garage band again. Result: 35 minutes of tight alternative-punk-rock that will pull us through the summer. Apart from that awful closer, that is. Score: 9/14 Preview

Foals - AntidotesFoals – Antidotes Last year Oxford quintet Foals released an exciting live 12” full of bleepy math-nerd-indie. Sadly they didn’t include their singles so far on the album which sounds pretty boring compared to the nervous EP. With Battles’ success (Mirrored) in mind though, this band could be this year’s festival surprise, having an intense live reputation. Score: 7/14 Preview

The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The LonelyThe Raconteurs – Consolers Of The Lonely …and then there was a new Raconteurs album. And boy oh boy, it’s good! Jack White and Brendan Benson produce yet another modern blues rock classic, this one beating the debut by quite some. Stomping rhythms, screaming solos, heavy horn sections, already an album of the year candidate. Score: 13/14 Preview

Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngster...Los Campesinos! – Hold On Now, Youngster… My head is full of one-two-three-fours and xylophone tingles! I can’t read out loud most song titles on this record without breaking my tongue! Yet cheeky lyrics on joyful melodies also left me unable to stop dancing around my room for the past month! Great dance-pop with guitars! Los Campesinos! make me Clunk-Rewind-Clunk-Play-Clunk! Score: 11/14

The Kooks - KonkThe Kooks – Konk I’ve tried not to mention that stupid album name in this review. But since this record sounds exactly like the debut, they might as well rename it Inside Finally Out. And to be perfectly honest, it doesn’t even really compare to the debut apart from a single or two. Sophomore slump in a nutshell. Score: 5/14 Preview

Tedje, varitonenmuziek!

December 19th, 2007 by waar

What started out as a torture device invented for the US army turned out to be an interesting application for horn instruments, mostly used in jazz in the 60’s & 70’s. Saxophonists played with these electronics with mixed results, but other horn players didn’t use the technology.

tEDJE

Eddie Harris with Varitone sax.

The next recording was made in San Francisco in ‘81 with Jimmy Smith on Hammond B3.

brainyYep, you’ve got it right. Even without some *plop*s I sometimes have to puke at all the Brainy news that is coming at you sometimes. So for all that have the same feeling sometimes (for example about, but not restricted to, the RI double A) here is a nice Brainy music compilation. I’ve handpicked, with care, some of the best tracks around. Which basically means typing “brain” in my favourite soulseeker. Well anyway. Enjoy it!

Hiphop van de bovenste plank [update]

August 19th, 2007 by martello

Top Shelf 8/8/88 Compilatie

Een album met lost tapes uit 1988. Hiphop van de bovenste plank, Japan only…

“Introduction: 17 years ago a small recording studio, TOP SHELF, located in the basement of a brownstone in the East Village section of New York, was looted during the Thompkins Square riots of 1988, displacing the recordings of many soon-to-be Hip Hop stars. The studio had been the meeting place for many rappers, neighborhood kids, and producers that would later be responsible for the greatest period of the Hip Hop age, “The Golden Era.” A search commenced soon after the recordings were lost, but nothing was ever found. So sought after were the tapes, they soon acheived Holy Grail status amongst Hip Hop circles. Despite years of searching, and dozens of hopeless crusades, the tapes remained lost. No one was quite sure who took them or where they were… until now.

Lowlands 2007 # 13

August 16th, 2007 by Maks

+ Kubus – Stickstof
+ Kubus & Bang Bang
+ Opgezwolle & CeeMajor & Pete Philly – Freestyle
+ Opgezwolle ft. DuvelDuvel – Pimp Rappers
+ Opgezwolle ft. Typhoon – Fackop Brigade
+ Opgezwolle Rico & Kubus – Buitenbad
+ Opgezwolle, Raymzter en Kubus – Een beetje vertieft

Kubus & Bang Bang will play on Saturday 18th Aug 14.30 at the Bravo-tent
