In 1971 richtte Chris Bell de band Big Star op. Samen met zijn maatje Alex Chilton schreef hij een uniek album dat commercieel geen opzien baarde.
De plaat staat vol eigenzinnige, virtuoos vertolkte pop-rock songs. Invloeden varieeren van The Who tot The Byrds.

The always cool Lord Sjakie pointed me onto this one yesterday evening: “Such Hawks, Such Hounds: Scenes from the American Hard Rock Underground“. A great movie about all those bands that are misguidingly called either doom or stoner. Then again this movie also takes on a bit of a wider view and it also includes modern day psychedelic bands Comets On Fire and Bardo Pond to the lot.. which (to me) makes totally sense. Loads of good bits with people from Sunn O))), Kyuss, Melvins, High On Fire, Sleep.. etc etc. Just fucking get it here and watch it!! ‘Cause I say so! (btw: Sjakie probably hasn’t seen it himself, yet)
Dit is de eerste plaat van Can. Toen nog met de oorspronkelijke zanger Malcolm Mooney die vrij kort daarna, op aanraden van zijn psychotherapeut, de band verliet. Een bonte mix van minimal music, rock en avantgarde. Can heeft het experiment hoog in het vaandel staan, zoals het hoort.
