Car Wash is a well known song, even without the christina whore cover from 2004. However, not everyone is aware it was the title song to a blaxploitation flick from the seventies. And a nice flick as well, may I say. Starring Richard Richard Pryor AND George Carlin, that is.

It’s mainly ’bout sum lazy negroes, working at a carwash. However, they touch ya during their lazy-ass day.

TV-film naar een geweldig kort verhaal van Kurt Vonnegut. Uitgangspunt is een futuristisch Amerika waar iedereen gelijk hoort te zijn en handicaps worden uitgedeeld aan diegenen die beter zijn dan gemiddeld. Voor liefhebbers van domme amerikanen is dat uiteraard genieten geblazen.

Sober gefilmd (ik zou ook graag een versie van Terry Gilliam willen zien) maar effektief en lekker wegkijkend. Die gozer die een hobbit speelt in LOTR speelt de hoofdrol en doet dat prima, hoewel het in het begin wat lastig is om niet konstant te checken of zijn schoenmaat toevallig bovenmatig groot is.

Klassieker in m’n favoriete genre: dystopische sci-fi. Speelt zich af in een tijd die de onze zou kunnen zijn dus geen gekke ruimteschepen en futuristische toestanden (hoewel dat af en toe ook best prettig om te zien is maar dat terzijde).

Misschien dat het plot als enigszins simplistisch kan worden opgevat maar dat wordt ruimschoots vergoed door de geweldige sfeer, prima regie en akteerprestaties.

Nog wat associaties betreffende dit meesterwerkje: David Icke lijkt zijn hele theorie op deze film gebaseerd te hebben.
De film zelf lijkt dan weer aardig wat dingetjes opgepikt te hebben uit de Illuminatus trilogie (en dan voornamelijk het begrip fnords).

Down te loaden in verschillende formaten. Ik ben gegaan voor de complete DVD (incl subs). Ook avi is ruimschoots beschikbaar maar dus niet vooraf getest.

Om te vieren dat we nog steeds een ad-free blog zijn hier een net-na-het-weekendmovie in sfeer. Lekker kort door de bocht met horror/cult elementen, precies zoals we dat hier graag zien.
Ik wil niet teveel verklappen maar er komt een pratende puist in voor, lijkt me voldoende reden om naar de downloadlink te sprinten en “buut vrij!” te roepen.

Nina Paley intertwines her own pinkbird broken heart story with the ancient stories of the Rmayana, the habit of debating the true versions of it and the beautiful smartful songs of 1920’s jazz vocalist Annette Hanshaw -”cheeks like peaches and a voice of honey“.

Completely animated in different styles matching the storylines, this is one mesmerizing and well done love therapy. The present-day break up of animator Nina finds connects flawless with the story of Sita, a goddess separated from her Lord and husband Rama, all bound together by the heart yearnings of Anette Hanshaw.
Cartoonist Paley wants to release the animation 100% DRM-free, but in order to do so, she has to raise $50,000 to pay the holders of some of the musical compositions used in the film. So if you want to download a high definition version of Sita sings the blues, you can give a donation via Channel Thirteen, where you can see the movie in small screen too. If you want, you can even order a DVD-packaging. Plain donation support for the free release of this film can be made thru here, that is, if you want the googles to have your credit card info. Gewoon een erg goede film. Lekker gewelddadig (sleutelwoord: FUNCTIONEEL, meneer Gibson). Goed geakteerd. Vergeet niet de subs erbij te downen anders is het geen doen, dat noord-engelse accent.

Shane McConkey

Shane is well known for pioneering & popularizing extreme skiing with base jumping.

Not surprising, are his splendid skills featured in plenty of films. This weekend I like to put attention to one of his films, the film Steep (2007).

As this film attempts to find out why/how people like Shane keep on choosing to run the deadly and dangerous extreme sports. Sure its extreme fun, but after losing more than just one hand of friends, doesn’t that make them think? Shane now follows Doug Coombs, who died shortly before the end of the production of the movie Steep.

Notwithstanding, the movie ALSO gives a great overview of extreme skiing history and how it is still evolving/growing. Off course with amazing footage:

Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise
Sell, sell, fucking sell. A gritty view on the vacuum sales branche, especially the sales representatives. Everything for a sale. After the disappointing “The Beach” Boyle is here more on Trainspotting ground. Extremely fast paced and rough around the edges, but also very entertaining.

Strumpet
Poet Strayman meets loner Strumpet and a artistic relation is born, but then the outside world is going to emerge. Although not as fast as the previous movie, Strumpet is a energetic movie. The storyline is not quite original, but the outcome is surprisingly intriguing. One of my favourite tv movies of all time.

Yes, take a look at that… Finally I got my hands on it. I used to have it on an old VHS tape. Ever since I joined Och as editor I wanted to have it as Weekend Movie! 

This is probably one of the weirdest movies you’ll ever see. I think the image on the left is already enough to give you a faint idea.. Sean Connery in a wacko red nappy running around with a gun.

Film-maker Chris Waitt will almost certainly never know the touch of a woman again. Which is a shame, because as his documentary A Complete History Of My Sexual Failures (the clue’s in the title) will attest, he really really needs to. He’s not hideous-looking, if you like scruffy Kurt Cobain-esque student types, and he managed to get funding for a film, so he’s got at least rudimentary powers of persuasion. Anticipating the upcoming release of The Collective’s third moutainbike film, Seasons (april 2008), this Weekendmovie features their first self-titled film, The Collective (2004). The Collective is a group of mountain bikers, filmmakers and photographers that ride bikes, shoot films and take photographs (duh!). Most of you are familiar with their second film, Roam (2006), that has been shown here before. So you’ll probably like this one too.

After months of peaceful rest, its about time to open the gates of the OchCult Corner for another screening of a movie from the underground. This time the Corner brings you britain’s first punk movie ever to hit the cinema: Jubilee directed by Derek Jarman.

The staff of the OchCult Corner received some complaints from the dead bodies scattered around here. It seems that some illegal parties were held in the Corner. We regret that our loyal customers had to turn around in their VIP-graves multiple times and hope something horrified as this will never happen again in our prosperous place. As a result of this the OchCult Corner handles a strict door policy.

From mid 70’s the world was faced with a new breed of scum. After the hippies, there were punks celebrating a life of doing nothing and hailing for an anarchic society. This latter as a result of paint intoxicating. The monarchy was enemy number one of the punks. In the year 1977 when Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee, the Sex Pistols revolted against the Royal Family with their “God Save The Queen“, an instant punk anthem. The song hits the highest places and stirred a lot of controverse in the more conservative parts of Britain.

This is were Jubilee starts. Queen Elizabeth II is no more and the streets of Britannia are ruled by the subcultural punks and fascist policemen. With the media as the controller of the world. The punks are doing everything what someone will do when he/she got bored. Just killing people or hanging around in lousy bars en clubs. Nothing human is them strange. Jubilee screams “Anarchy In The UK” in all its faeces. A visionary of an country in decay, where the music is played loud enough, to ignore the sounds of the world falling apart. Of course a OchCult movie can’t without some torture, sodomy and blasphemy and Jubilee delivers this, so all of you could watch this movie with a peaced hart.

Some notable punk icons appears in this movie. Among others Jordan, Toyah Willcox and introducing Adam Ant. Making this movie not only a milestone in british cinema, but also a true reflection of the punk era. Enjoy Jarman’s vision of no future.

The third edition of the Tour of California leaves Palo Alto this Sunday and what better way to commemorate that with Hollywoods most successful cycling flick (excluding ET): Breaking Away (1979). Especially when you consider the rumoured and supposed come-back of il Re Leone himself.

In Breaking Away, the focus is on cycling and a boy’s obsession with it. But within the story lies a moral tale. It tells of growing up and learning to see the bigger picture.

Yada yada yada, storyline and stuff. The cycling kid (Dave) manifests his cycling obsession by speaking Italian and listening to Italian opera at home meanwhile driving his father crazy, and acting at school as an Italian exchange student to impress some big-eyed brunette. Funny episode is that when the Italian professional cycling team Cinzano comes over to race and can’t get rid of Dave on his Masi, they decide to throw a pump in his front wheel. Now who thought that inviting Cipollini to the Tour of California was a good thing for American cycling?

Although the movie showcases some cyling Fanta, most of it is not really disturbing. However, chasing the Cinzano truck at 50mph on a 42 tooth inner ring is a bit too much Fanta imho. Anyhow, this is the movie that many American cyclists claim to be their grand motivator for hopping on a bike. Nothing wrong with that atmo. Another curiosity, the movie was shot entirely on location (in Bloomington). A feature that we have seen before here at Och. Enjoy!
