Nee precies.

Na maanden voorbereiding is het aanstaande donderdag “Alpe d’HuZes 2011” waar ik samen met vijfduizend anderen zal proberen twintig miljoen euro voor KWF Kankerbestrijding te werven. Een snel rekensommetje leert dat per deelnemer dus vijfduizend euro aan donaties geworven moet worden. Ik kom nu nog duizend euro te kort en dat voelt niet goed daags voor mijn beklimmingen.

Al het geld van Alpe d’Huzes komt in een apart fonds wat volledig wordt ingezet voor onderzoek en de aanpak van kanker! Geen geld naar directeuren of administratie, maar rechtstreeks naar het doel waarvoor het bedoeld is. Belgisch meest spraakmakende renner is op jonge leeftijd overleden. Er kan heel veel over’m gezegd worden maar die ene fabelachtige aanzet in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik zegt eigenlijk alles.

Om de impact van dit legendarische figuur aan niet-wielerliefhebbers uit te leggen is erg lastig. Dat het uitspreken van de afkorting van z’n naam “VDB” in Belgie voldoende is om volwassen mannen op de knieen te krijgen zegt misschien al iets. Door deze ongehoorde toestanden is de bijnaam van VDB dan ook simpelweg “God”.
Zijn boek “Ik ben God niet” schijnt behoorlijk de moeite waard te zijn. Hij had in ieder geval genoeg te vertellen. Zijn leven was immers een unieke opeenstapeling van hoogte en dieptepunten. Een normaal mens zou er in 80 jaar nog niet klaar mee zijn. Hij heeft het in 34 jaar gepropt. Rust in vrede Frank.

Gast! is wat gezakt, JayJay wat gestegen. Nodog handaaft zich toch vrij verassend in de top en ikiro is, zoals verwacht, bezig z’n achterstand goed te maken. Rams is nog steeds niet hersteld van die fatale 10 minuten waarin z’n selektie werd gemaakt. Illegaal bewijst dat als je een aap laat kiezen je ook gewoon in de middenmoot terechtkomt.

Bobby Martin is niet your typical r&r-ster. Als de andere mannen gingen zitten zuipen of diverse exotische soa’s opliepen, hing Bobby (inmiddels Robert) aan de deur van de badkamer, stond hij op z’n kop tegen de muur of rende hij een keer of vijftien een heuvel op en af. Dat deed hij niet voor niets. Op zijn 61ste ziet Robert Martin er beter uit dan dan al z’n collega-muzikanten. Frank Zappa? Tegenwoordig niet meer om aan te zien. Ray White? Een dikke oude man geworden. Scott Thunes? Helemaal de weg kwijt!

Robert wil zijn kennis graag delen met jou! En met jou en jou! En het is allemaal zo eenvoudig. Slechts 19 minuten per dag inspannen en je kunt weer voor de dag komen op het strand. Robert, hartelijk dnak!

Het is een behoorlijk spec-
taculaire tour totnutoe. Ook in de 0ch-subleague heeft dat consequenties. Wellicht draait alles om nadat de eerste bergritten zijn verreden maar degenen die op de juiste sprinters gemikt hebben trekken daar totnutoe flink profijt van.

Een paar dingen die opvallen: Armstrong wordt erg verschillend ingeschat (de 1 heeft’m als kluns, de ander als volwaardig teamlid). Op Freire na had men totnutoe beter geen Rabo-renners kunnen kiezen. Cancellara en Martin zijn lekker goedkope puntenpakkers gebleken.

Hier de huidige stand:

Opvallende hoogte- en dieptepunten: Rams weet het voor elkaar te krijgen een negatief puntenaantal bij elkaar te schrapen. Dit waarschijnlijk omdat hij z’n pl00g net gedurende z’n, zo’n 10 minuten durende, sobere periode van de dag heeft gekozen. Voor een brabantse wielerkenner is dat uiteraard funest.
Nodog weet boven zichzelf uit te stijgen en staat op de waarschijnlijk hoogste plaats in het algemeen klassement ooit door een 0cher ingenomen. Blijkbaar is hij daardoor zo van de kaart dat hij in derde persoon enkelvoud gaat spreken. Ikiro stelt niet teleur als zijnde 0ch’s wielerorakel en gaat naar verwachting nog wel wat plaatsjes opschuiven.

Jup the King of the Hill just went a little bit higher.

Much has changed since he and Tenzing were the first on the Everest. Like dumping your trash is heavily checked, you can make a phone call when your on the top and not getting to the top is important anymore, but how many clothes you wear, which route for what amount of cash and who you leave behind. True, the story of Into Thin Air proved that still your travel agency requires some training besides money, but that sounds like a issue of details, right?

Note: Sadly it doesn’t include any footage of the final summit ascent – IIRC in Hillary’s book I believe he says that they didn’t take the 16mm camera on the summit bid as it was too heavy, but there’s some fantastic footage from the days when mountaineers wore brylcreem and thick chunky sweaters, and contemplated tricky routes with a few knowing nods over a pipe. Great stuff.

Extreme Ironing, where people take to ironing in remote and dangerous locations, doesn’t have a huge following in Japan, but is an established international sport.

EIJ, Extreme Ironing Japan, is now the largest active extreme ironing group and takes great pride in the sport of Extreme Ironing.

While I will be destroying a perfectly good clutch, you guys might take the time to check out some motorcycle history.

In 1991 John Britten took his hand built motorcycle to Daytona to compete in the Battle of the Twins race. The bike finished second. So he went home to New Zealand and started on what would be a legend of a motorcycle and probably the most succesful home built motorcycle ever. The plan was to win the 1992 race.

The new bike was full of new and non-traditional technology. The most notabale were the extensive use of carbon fibres (in the early 90s still an exotic material) and the Hossack-type front suspension (another link).

The Hossack front suspension is like a double wishbone system. And also, as impact on the skyrocket, the fork part of this thing was made out of carbon.

And then, ofcourse, there is the design of the thing. Designed and made without any computers. The V-1000 was displayed at several museums, amongst others the Guggenheim Museum.

The build of the Britten V-1000, as the bike was named, was filmed and made into a documentary. The voice-over is pretty cheesy, but there is some great footage of John Britten and his fellow builders figuring out carbon fibres, cooling down cast engine components with water from the swimming pool and of course the race in Daytona.
