Finally, after all you happy Harry Potter campers and Elf dream-boys had your woohoo moment, we can finally get ready for some down-to-earth tale telling as it is. So dump your cuddle Frodo, with feelings all over the place and sentimental bla bla with superstitions and lalalala fantasy, circus, magic and superduperpowers…

Because someone in Russia has taken the time to set the record straight: The last Ring Bearer, is out on the interwebs for download!

In this Wiki-LOTR-leak the truth about the winners-side, other than the propaganda movies is told.

Laura Miller puts it nicely:
That wizard Gandalf is a war-monger with intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science ‘destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men’ and Aragorn is depicted by Yeskov as a ruthless Machiavellian schemer who is ultimately the puppet of his wife, the elf Arwen. Sauron’s citadel Barad-dur is, by contrast, described as ‘that amazing city of alchemists and poets, mechanics and astronomers, philosophers and physicians, the heart of the only civilization in Middle-earth to bet on rational knowledge and bravely pitch its barely adolescent technology against ancient magic.
Exactly!

So what do you do if you’ve lost momentum? You become that garage band again. Result: 35 minutes of tight alternative-punk-rock that will pull us through the summer. Apart from that awful closer, that is. Score: 9/14 Preview

Foals – Antidotes Last year Oxford quintet Foals released an exciting live 12” full of bleepy math-nerd-indie. Sadly they didn’t include their singles so far on the album which sounds pretty boring compared to the nervous EP. With Battles’ success (Mirrored) in mind though, this band could be this year’s festival surprise, having an intense live reputation. Score: 7/14 Preview

The Raconteurs – Consolers Of The Lonely …and then there was a new Raconteurs album. And boy oh boy, it’s good! Jack White and Brendan Benson produce yet another modern blues rock classic, this one beating the debut by quite some. Stomping rhythms, screaming solos, heavy horn sections, already an album of the year candidate. Score: 13/14 Preview

I can’t read out loud most song titles on this record without breaking my tongue! Yet cheeky lyrics on joyful melodies also left me unable to stop dancing around my room for the past month! Great dance-pop with guitars! Los Campesinos! make me Clunk-Rewind-Clunk-Play-Clunk! Score: 11/14
Preview

But since this record sounds exactly like the debut, they might as well rename it Inside Finally Out. And to be perfectly honest, it doesn’t even really compare to the debut apart from a single or two. Sophomore slump in a nutshell. Score: 5/14 Preview

What is new? According to the dictionary, new means “recently brought into being”. It can also mean “unaccustomed”, as in “They are new to the scene.” The first definitely applies to the Utrecht-based collective Nobody Beats The Drum, but the second doesn’t.

The crossover trio consists of a DeeJay handling the wheels of steel in Zuco 103 (Sjam Sjamsoedin), a VeeJay (yes, a band with a video artist!) that made clips for C-Mon & Kypski (Rogier Van Der Zwaag) and a KeyJay that happens to be in C-Mon & Kypski (Jori Collignon). They won the Grote Prijs van Nederland back in 2003. They have been building on an outstanding live reputation ever since. So what’s new then? It has taken half a decade to make, but it has finally arrived: Beats Work. The band’s debut album should be the final missing piece, the crown on their success so far. Question remains: is it?

Less than a minute into the record we learn that beats indeed work. Fat drums and samples get you out of your chair; it doesn’t matter if you’re a rock or hip-hop fan, you will find something on this record that makes you dance. Every song has been carefully crafted, with a lot of layers and variation in the soundscape throughout the entire album. It will be hard to determine which track should be the next single, as most of them have potential to do well in the clubs.

It is a pity my room is nothing like that dirty basement club downtown, though. The studio versions sound a little too clean at times. The closing tracks of the album show that the real damage should be done on stage. They scream for sampling and have over-the-top live additions like horns and bells written all over themselves. The visuals lack on cd, both from their video artist as well as the live button mashing. Luckily, the obligatory record is finally finished and Nobody Beats The Drum can continue what they’ve been doing best for five years now: perform.
- People SMS’ing constantly during the movie should be executed positionlegally (this is a new irritation which can be added to last years list).
- Dude from the festival introducing a Taiwanese director and when that director makes a joke in chinese laughing like a maniac before the translation starts. - Not enough gangster, horror, korean, sci-fi, hong-kong, manga movies all around.
- Excellent atmosphere with real friendly people. Luckily no change from other versions in that respect.

Traditionally a new music year kicks off with the “Noorderslagweekend” in Groningen. First two days of Eurosonic followed by the saturday for the incrowd dutch music business at the Noorderslag festival itself. For the real music pioneer the Eurosonic festival is the thing to look for. With over 200 bands playing at 30 venues, it is the ultimate wet dream of every music sn0b. Below you can find the route which I and my brother in music have followed.

Eurosonic: Thursday
As In Rebekkamaria (Huis ‘De Beurs’)
Cocorosie that is the first thing that jumps in your mind when you hear RebekkaMaria Andersson with her solo project As In Rebekkamaria. Where Cocorosie is more on the dreamy side, RebekkaMaria throws more power into her electropop tracks. Live the She-Lion performs with a band featuring a Gunther look-alike. Impressive performance which screams for more. Luckily the debut album of RebekkaMaria will see daylight just before spring.

Olafur Arnalds (De Spieghel, main)
‘De Spieghel’ for once was turned into a sitting area. Silently the listeners let them dwell into the beautiful world Olafur created. With minimal electronics blend with classic instruments Olafur built up a tension of something to come. For half an hour ‘De Spieghel’ was the most quiet place on earth. A big thumbs up for the audience for their respect to keep their mouths shut! Music for a lazy/drowny sunday afternoon.

Hanne Hukkelberg (Stadsschouwburg)
When we waked up out of the icelandic dream, we went to the Stadsschouwburg to see a few tracks of norwegian singer/songwriter Hanne Hukkelberg. This was some hit and run event, but the moments we were there it was good. No, better the music directly gets you. The voice of Hanne and the atmosphere was just perfect. Unfortunately we had to leave to see the next gig, otherwise this was another highlight in the early stages of this Eurosonic. Thankfully 3voor12 has put the concert online.

Adept (Simplon, Up)
The first time I saw Adept, it was at Lowlands in the X-Ray when the sun was shining bright. Not the right conditions for an Adept performance. No, this time it was the small dark Simplon venue and what a difference this made. The music of Adept, pumps, sucks and crushes every good intention out of you. There is only one option, you have to deliver your soul to the devil and worship Adept. It is only a matter of time, within half an hour you are completely reborn put back on earth!

Krakow (De Spieghel, Up)
Full of adrenaline we went to the next gig: Krakow out of Belgium. This was another piece of cook. Maybe it was not a good idea to make such a switch music wise, because Krakow couldn’t impress me much. Well played, but the madness of Adept was still tolling in my head. Sorry girl and guys of Krakow, I heard from others that the performance was well received.

Lykke Li (Grand Theatre, Up)
A Swedish *sigh* girl! Exciting, sensual and attractive. Lykke Li has it all. As a bonus the tracks sounds nice as well. The perfect act to clear your mind after the Adept-assault! Forget France, Sweden is the new country to sigh! Approved by Filles Sourires. Nothing on the hand popmusic, that’s what Hooverphonic is up to. Started as trip hop the sound of Hooverphonic evolved through the years more to the nowadays sound of psychedelic pop. Hooverphonic is a no risk act to visit. You get what you want, nothing more, nothing less. Damn, just forget what I just said. It is not about the music of course, it is the front lady Geike Arnaert who drews all the attention to her. Hooverphonic on stage = Geike! And I love Geike. Fat dot.
Si Schroeder (Grand Theatre, Up)
For a threesome I would invite Lykke and Geike and put up a cd of Si Schroeder. That would make up to an almost perfect evening. Candlelights and the somewhat dark folktronica of Si in the background. What more does a man want! What more does a man need! Impressive set of this Irish man, a little bit let down by the clothing of the band around him. But hey, I’m fly-shifting here.

Some people fall at sleep after a portion of buttsecks or two. But I like to play with my good old joystick any further. So after the tension in Grand Theatre it was time to release all the urges of man and jump into the gameworld called Slagsmålsklubben. This is Scandinavian weirdness at their best. The techno-bit-gamepop turns out to be very danceable and for the second time the Simplon Up venue went totally balloonies. When the last bits were squeeshed out of the controllers, the innermind said it was game over for the first day of Eurosonic.

Welkom in Stabroek. Waar?!

UPDATED!

dDamage – Shimmy Shimmy Blade:

MySpace

Kate Nash – Made Of Bricks:

Death metal, death metal .. yes!

Yesterday evening Oslo Norway had some fucked up visitors. The american band Nunslaughter (pic left) played at the local studentclub Betong in the cellar of the Chateau Neuf building. The gig was organised by metal promotor South of Heaven. The organisation had put up three support acts! Value for money or…??

First band playing was Unspoken, a local band from the Oslo area. Unspoken seemed like a young and promising band. Although they are clearly not in the league of the rest of the bands of this evening (yet?). Vocalist Kent Are Sommerseth made a very good impression with a strong aggressive voice that was at times even understandable (!). Also the bassplayer made a very good impression with his fingerpicking fretless bassplaying. The lead guitarist clearly did not have his night though. Unspokens tunes were quite decent mid-paced death metal. Maybe in a few years time we’ll hear something from these enthousiastic guys. Enjoyable!

Second this night was Nominon from Sweden. These guys looked like veterans… and that’s how they played. The drummer is probably one of the strong points of this band. Their fast and ferocious style of death metal sounded impressive and tight. Sometimes they reminded me a bit of their fellow countrymen Unleashed. The stage presentation was a blast. Particulary guitarplayer Christian Strömblad is worth mentioning with his tall posture and hilarious drunk stage anticts. Aanrader!

How different was Demonical. This band also hails from Sweden and since they had some more time to get the alcohol flowing they, as I might be so free, absolutely sucked. They were pretty drunk and the singer was an irritating little dwarf that kept on bugging the soundman in between the songs for more sound on the stage monitors. The music sounded very average and the guitar player had the type of guitar sound that just completely takes over the whole sound spectrum. Very unprofessional stage appearance and behaviour. The Oslo audience was seemingly not happy with them either, there was an undercurrent of hostility in the air… I suspect they fucked up before when they were visiting Oslo in April. A part of the audience was shouting that they should ‘take their shit back to fucking Sweden’. Sucked monkeyballs with their unprofessional behaviour.

Headliner Nunslaughter knew how to please the audience… Their simplified minimalistic form of death metal went straight to the core. (You could even argue that Nunslaughter is the Spinal Tap of Death Metal…) Their lyrics and music are reeking of an extremely thick extract of the essence of what death metal was and still should be. No solos, no long intros just old style death metal that goes for the jugular. Drummer Jim Sadist is hilarious with his in between song banter and stupid jokes. Songs of Nunslaughter seldom last longer than two minutes. Lyrics are reduced statements that listen to names like “I hate Christians” or “The Power Of Darkness”, very deep and intellectual (he he he he). But: Great set, high enjoyment factor and the crowd kept on shouting for more. Nunslaughter is first and foremost a load of FUN!

Nominon’s latest album “Terra Necrosis” is a damn fine death metal album. Take a listen to it. Fans of that good ol’ Swedish Death Metal should LISTEN!
Nunslaughter’s latest album “Hex” is a festival of the straightforwardness in death metal music. If you don’t like clichés then stay away.. If you can enjoy the feeling of 80’s thrash/death and are not bothered with anything else then I say: go for it!

A review of Spoon's new album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

I don’t really know what to think of the new Spoon record. Why is it called Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga for instance? Is it a rebirth of some kind? Are they secretly smiling as we try to pronounce it in a clear way to the record store owner as we buy it? Is it because a matrix of 5 by 10 “Ga”s in your media player looks so nice? Anyway, it doesn’t make any sense to me…

The music doesn’t really make sense to me either. The songs dance around my head, but don’t stick. Or do they? You got Yr. Cherry Bomb is very catchy. Actually, The Underdog is pretty catchy too. And I tend to repeat Finer Feelings at least once when I arrive at the far side of the record. But then it’s over and everything vanishes. Until I put the record up again.

But why do I keep putting it up? Well, it’s not a bad record. Not at all. On the contrary. It just passes by to say hi, it makes some friendly conversation, you enjoy it at the time, and then it moves on. Some things just aren’t meant to stay. It’s a nice little breeze, except you can put it up if you need it, or just feel like having one.

A review of Editors' sophomore release, An End Has A Start.

To release one of the most anticipated and undoubtedly interesting sophomore albums of 2007 is a hard thing to do right. Arctic Monkeys passed with honors, Bloc Party and Maxïmo Park certainly did well, but what about Editors?

The first seconds of Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors immediately bring us back to 2005. The voice. The howling guitars. The stomping drums. But most of all: the singles. That’s what The Back Room brought us: Blood, Munich, All Sparks; all huge walls of sound collapsing on top of us, all massive alternative rock hits.

There’s more of that on An End Has A Start. The title track (second single?) will smash festivals throughout this summer, and Escape The Nest and The Racing Rats have the potential to do so. In comparison to The Back Room, the lyrics are darker, the pathos is, again, overwhelming, there’s more orchestral parts, there’s choirs… In short: Editors are bigger than ever.

But the other tracks feel like filler, they’re “just” more of the same. There’s nothing wrong with making a “container” album full of potential singles, like Franz Ferdinand’s You Could Have It So Much Better, for example, but now the thin line between acting and overacting is crossed. Tom Smith starts to sound over-emotional, the drama feels over the top, the voice gets a little annoying and suddenly 45 minutes seem a bit long for only 10 songs.

So please, take out the sledgehammers at the festivals this summer, and combine both albums into one thumping set leaving us all shattered to pieces. Because when Editors hit the right notes, no one resists.

A review of Xavier Rudd's 7th album, White Moth.

Imagine yourself sitting on the terrace of your beautiful beachside mansion. It’s a beautiful day in July. Or August, but that’s besides the point. You’re enjoying your refreshing and quite possibly alcoholic early evening beverage while a soft breeze blows the hot air in your face. What kind of music would add to a moment like that?

Jack Johnson you say? Or Matt Costa? Or maybe Donavon Frankenreiter?

Possibly. But not tonight. Imagine your beach house isn’t on Hawaii. It’s not in California either. No, you’re watching the Great Ocean from the other side, from the Australian point of view. Sunny tunes accompany you while you’re catching the last rays of sunlight.

It’s getting a little colder outside. While the music from your sound system softly lingers on, you decide to spend the rest of the evening on the veranda, where it’s warm and cosy. The noises from the beach party some distance away fade, and you start to make out this characteristic voice coming from inside your house. You finish your drink. The voice has some excellent company. There’s traditional instruments. There’s an aboriginal choir.

This isn’t just sunny tunes. It’s pure folk. And as you go inside for another drink, the cover of the CD your friend gave you last week catches your eye. A White Moth sits there, ready to fly away. And right on top of the moth it reads Xavier Rudd.

One man created all this?

Quite, yes. The multi-instrumentalist from Torquay documented a personal and spiritual journey on his 7th album, writing critical lyrics and playing almost every instrument on the album himself.

You sit down next to your speakers, to listen, to hear what he has to say. And then it all becomes clear. Jack and Matt are great artists to enjoy and listen to with friends. But life isn’t always a party and Xavier knows that. Yet he also knows that shouldn’t keep you from listening to music that keeps the sun from shining.

As you immerse yourself in the soundscapes he creates, you decide to keep Xavier to yourself for a little while. That might just be the reason why a lot of people haven’t heard from him yet. But if you have, you’ll agree that an intimate setting is the best place to listen to his music. As long as upon emersion, you tell your best friend.

Review of DeVotchKa's first European release, their 2004 US breakthrough album "How It Ends".

I’m not much of a soundtrack fan. I like movies, don’t get me wrong, but I usually can’t be bothered by listening to the music that was in a motion picture, just for being in it. There is the occasional exception, like the excellent 90s pop record accompanying teen flick Cruel Intentions, containing songs by The Verve, Skunk Anansie, Placebo and many other popular acts. Another example of a soundtrack I really do like is the one to Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain, composed by Yann Tiersen.

Why this introduction? Because DeVotchKa’s major claim to fame so far is being part of the soundrack to last years Academy Award-winning indie film hit Little Miss Sunshine. Opposed to Sufjan Stevens, which I noticed straight away, it took me over 6 months (read: until now) to find out DeVotchKa was the band responsible for the compelling opening tune to this movie (How It Ends), as well as some other songs (including You Love Me and Til The End Of Time).

And now, they landed a record deal with Anti to storm Europe by releasing their 2004 US breakthrough record How It Ends. Starting of gently with the forementioned You Love Me, the album really comes to live on the second track, the thriving and anthemic western-tune The Enemy Guns. From there, DeVotchKa sways from left to right, absorbing Eastern European, Mediterranean, South American and Mexican influences along the way and delivering a variety of rootsy rock songs and more traditional folk pieces. The 7-minute title track is a great example of a song that should never end.

But then, a little past the halfway point on the album, a slight feeling of confusion takes hold of me. There’s a lot of well-crafted and interesting pieces of music on this album, but all the different influences, languages, emotions and rhythms start feeling a little chaotic and incoherent. Luckily, Viens Avec Moi and Lunnaya Pogonka pull you right back into the vibrant melting-pot of violins, guitars, piano and trumpets, clearly pointing out there is no time for thoughts or feelings like mine. A short reprise gives you time to catch your breath from the journey around the world you just made.

With Gogol Bordello being one of the festival surprise acts of the past 12 months, agents should start looking out for DeVotchKa, as they just might be that next best (or even better) thing in folk-and-gypsy-punk-land.

About Blank, hartelijk bedankt het was fantastisch !

50-word album reviews, fourth edition.

Scott Matthews – Passing Stranger
Somehow this record managed to slip by me in 2006. Which, in this case, is a crying shame. So, mea culpa, it’s 2007, welcome Scott Matthews. This guy’s debut breathes more freshness than Paolo Nutini, and sounds more traditional than James Morrison, competitors in his league. Awesome, funky, melodious record. Score: 12/14 Preview (sampler)

Bloc Party – A Weekend In The City
The most anticipated release in the indiescene for the last 3 months; Bloc Party’s second was never going to top the excellent Silent Alarm. How close did they get? The theme of the album, the shallowness of modern day city life, makes it easy to identify with. It’s an excellent representation of the current Zeitgeist. Score: 11/14 Preview

Frank Turner – Sleep Is For The Week
Contemporary protest songs. There’s a market for them somewhere, I guess. Too bad it all sounds so bland. There’s potential, there’s witty lyrics on The Ladies of London Town and he entertains the crowd on the album’s closer, but these are only small highlights, unable to lift this record from mediocrity. Score: 5/14 Preview (Worst Things Happen…)

Little Barrie – Stand Your Ground
Debut album We Are Little Barrie sounded like a jam night at the local pub, with excellent drums, fresh songs and groovy guitars. Their second sounds like you entered the same jam night, 2 years later. Some things should never change. If you liked the first, buy this. If you don’t know them, buy both. Score: 11/14 Preview

Do-The-Undo – Do-The-Undo
First 2007 release of any importance in the Netherlands, former Daryll-Ann guitarist Anne Soldaat’s new band’s debut will enter competition with Johan for the nationals. Their sound is alike, but this record lacks an Oceans-like smash hit. Very entertaining though, happier than THX JHN, and a vital sign of life from the Dutch popscene. Score: 10/14 Preview
