Foo Fighters serenade them mad picketers from WBC

Roger Tullgren, 42, from Hässleholm in southern Sweden, has just got a new job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren‘s salary. His new boss meanwhile has given him a special dispensation to play loud music at work.Tullgren currently plays bass and guitar in two rock bands and says that he tends to get a lot of positive reactions for daring to be himself. “Some might say that I should grow up and learn to listen to other types of music but I can’t. Heavy metal is my lifestyle,” he said

The always cool Lord Sjakie pointed me onto this one yesterday evening: “Such Hawks, Such Hounds: Scenes from the American Hard Rock Underground“. A great movie about all those bands that are misguidingly called either doom or stoner.  Then again this movie also takes on a bit of a wider view and it also includes modern day psychedelic bands Comets On Fire and Bardo Pond to the lot..  which (to me) makes totally sense. Loads of good bits with people from Sunn O))), Kyuss, Melvins, High On Fire, Sleep.. etc etc. Just fucking get it here and watch it!! ‘Cause I say so! (btw: Sjakie probably hasn’t seen it himself, yet)

Horst Tappert died samstag aged 85. Between 1974 and 1998 he was the pinnacle of German culture for our generation. Rest in peace Hauptkommissar Derrick!

Mrs. Makeba

The last few years, I kept on seeing announcements that Miriam Makeba was to perform in town. Only, when I noticed the dates, it happened to have been last week. So I became slightly frustrated over the wish to take my mum along to see and especially hear that special woman she introduced me to.
Then finally last month, I saw she was performing again. In Paradiso, which was a plus, because the acoustics might be very well at the concertgebouw, and the grandeur matches the grandness of this lady, it remained an odd context for a woman of such importance for music and politics in music.
So after a fine African meal, we headed for the Paradiso. It was a surprise for my mum: she had never seen Miriam Makeba live before. So this was a good evening. A nice atmosphere and Miriam Makeba still with a beautiful voice in her seventies.
People in the audience kept on asking for Pata Pata, but I was nicely surprised by the songs I didn’t know yet. She ended her performance with an old skool a capella song, “sung by the young, from the days of old; because they have to know where they come from to know where they are going”.
After, we applauded. Some in the audience started clapping for a bis. I didn’t dare: she was 76! But heroine as she was: she gave an encore.
And then they lifted her in her wheelchair, I saw from the side of the balcony where we were seated.
So much more respect for her, that she still gave us this gift, her voice.
Monday morning the breakfast bulletin broke the news: Miriam Makeba is gone. I cried.
Thank you for your voice, Mrs. Makeba and what you did with it. She used to sing her old traditional South African songs, including the clickvowels, she sang about Patrice Lumumba, she sang about South Africa having to be as one. She sung Brazilian samba’s, she sung jazz, she sung West Indian ballads and calypso’s.
She finally crossed over.

I am warning you, NSFW!

Out of budgetary reasons I only allow myself a visit to a music store every now and then. On those occasions I usually buy a Maks a/o JayJay recommendation or two, replace some lost ceedees, buy a cat-in-a-sack and, of course, try to further complete my Old School HipHop, Funk, R&B and Soul catalogues.

OK, how was it also again?
In the beginning there was (the late) James Brown, the sine qua non of funkdom. He flicked a switch and reduced everything to mashed potatoes for an entire decade. A generation later, he was joined by brother Sly Stone at the high table to slip a little acid in the mix. Finally, William ‘Bootsy‘ Collins and Fred Wesley, both of much importance in JB’s JBs, moved to yet another side of the round table, and lined up with George Clinton (in both Parliament and Funkadelic, the two groups are really hard to separate).

Funkadelic recorded and released its magnum opus, One Nation Under a Groove in 1978. The titular track spent six weeks at #1 on the R&B charts, and I picked up a copy of the 2003 reproduction. This repro has the original sleeves/packaging details, and a nice and quite informative booklet. However, one song seems to have gone missing, and the booklet does not explain anything. It seems to be the song Chant although I am not completely sure, because none of the time-indications on Discogs seems to correspond with my edition.

So, a little enigma here, but a knee’s ear who pays to much attention thereto.
