Fifth! French techno pioneer Laurent Garnier.
Gladfully Tony Wilson’s funeral isn’t next Saturday at 18.15, because then Mr. Garnier probably would have been there to honour the man who gave him the opportunity to perform at his (in)famous Haçienda Club in Manchester instead of DJ-ing at the Lowlands festival.
Garnier is active in the techno/dance scene for quiet a long time. Started off in the late eighties, he is still going strong with innovating new productions at this very moment. This year he released ‘Public Outburst’, a compilation of the shows he did with keyboard players Benjamin Rippert and Bugge Wesseltoft and saxophone player Philippe Nadaud.
The last time I saw the ambassador of techno play live he had just released the unresistable jazz-influenced ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’ (2000), of which some say that it’s (together with ‘The Cloud Making Machine’ from 2005) his masterpiece. I’m not sure about that, but fact is that it’s a very divers and personal statement of Garnier’s electronic music which sure had a huge impact.
Let’s see what the man is up to at his Lowlands-set.
Check ‘The Man With The Red Face‘ from a concert at Pont du Gard, Paris with Bugge Wesseltoft on the piano. Like to hear that song in it’s original studio-version? Check the ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’ over here. Enjoy.
Laurent Garnier will play on Saturday 18th Aug 18.15 at the Bravo-tent
I’m shamelessly copying Maks’ format to present you another Och-favourite: The Shins. They were supposed to attend last year’s edition, cancelled because they worked on their new album, and now, a year later, they will present us the lovely sounds from their latest, record-breaking record, called Wincing The Night Away. Never before a Sub Pop record hit the stores like this.
You can pick up some songs from their different records at the label page. A little something from Lowlands cancellers Peter Bjorn & John: ‘Australia’ remixed. And, as a final treat: Bradley’s Almanac hosts a complete Shins performance at the Orpheum in Boston!
The Shins will play on Sunday 19th Aug 15.30 at the Grolsch-tent
Third post on ‘Lowlands 2007′: Groove Armada.
It must be somewhere around six or seven years ago that Groove Armada already did Lowlands. Back then their first album ‘Vertigo’ was just released including a true hit: ‘I See You Baby (shakin’ that ass)’ which was remixed over and over again by others later on. Another song on Vertigo became an instant hit and did quiet well on several lounge-compilations: ‘At The River’, an übercool and very laid-back track build upon a Patti Page sample from ‘Old Cape Cod’.
The Lowlands-gig Groove Armada did back then was a creative, soulful and stunning danceable set in a very good atmosphere, partly because of the gorgeous singer Andy Cato and Tom Findlay took with them on that tour. Although GA’s style over the years made a little move to a – imho – more popular, less underground style, they still can hit the crowd. Let’s hope the crowd can still shake their ass on sunday-evening after three long days.
White Noise offers you over ten random Groove Armada tracks. You can pick up those tracks one by one over here, but you can also pick up the complete album ‘Vertigo’ over here. Enjoy.
Groove Armada will play on Sunday 19th Aug 22.00 at the Bravo-tent
The second post on ‘Lowlands 2007′ is about Ojos De Brujo (Eyes of the Wizard in English), who describe themselves as a ‘Hiphop Flamenkillo’ group and that defenition suits them quiet well. To see ‘em play live is an absolute sensation, so the muchachos & muchachas from Ojos De Brujo for sure will get a big, enthusiastic audience to play for.
Though it’s always a bit of a surprise if they play a more ‘folky’ set or a more modern hiphop-flamengo-rock-clash set: sweat it will be! So put on your cultural dancing shoes and drown yourself in this Spanish (Catalonian) cult-event.
Olé!
Best of …Both Worlds presents their album ‘Techari’ from 2006. You can pick up the tracks one by one over here, but you can also pick ‘em up all at once here. Enjoy.
Ojos de Brujo will play on Saturday 18th Aug 16.45 at the Bravo-tent
One of the most exciting festivals (although some may doubt that) in The Netherlands, Lowlands, is coming up next week. It already is completely sold-out, so to those who’ll go there: lucky bastards, have fun! As usual some of the Och-editors also will give acte de présence to do some w00t-education, drink beer, strike a pose, pretend as if they are into arts, not doing drugs or not, desperately trying to get laid and – of course – to check out some music.
Up ’till then there’ll be some unregular posts concerning acts who’ll perform at Lowlands 2007. The one to kick off with is INTERPOL, the gloomy, New York based, aesthetic 80’s post-punk-wave, whatever rockers.
ÜberDrivel presents you a superb gig from Radio City Music Hall, March 2nd 2005.
You can pick up the tracks one by one over here, but you can also pick ‘em up all at once here. Enjoy.
INTERPOL will play on Saturday 18th Aug 20.45 at the Grolsch-tent
