Jetzt verteilt er seine Fischstäbchen im Himmel! Gerd Deutschmann, der jahrelang den sympathischen Käpt‘n Iglo verkörperte, ist am 21. Dezember 2011 an den Folgen einer Nerven-Krankheit gestorben.

Gerd war ein Homo Universalis. Er war nicht nur fuhr jahrzehnten der verkörperlichung des Kapitän Iglo’s, aber er machte auch furore als Taxi-chauffeur. Er war ueber alles ein Deutcher mit dem Herz auf dem richtigen Platz. Gerd sass hinten dem autosteuer wie ein richtigen fuehrer. Und sang dabei manchmal das lustige Mopfchen: wir fahren gegen England. Er war sehr beliebt bei dem vorausnähmlich wiesse Deutcher. Die uberzwogend gefarbten import Deutchen könnten sein Blut ja richtig trinken. Auch während durch fur ohne um Gerd jemand die nicht richtig Weiss wahre, das doppelte Ritpreise zahlen lassen wurden. Die Grappenmacher die ihnen mit Fischstäbchen zahlen wollten, schold Gerd die Haut voll. So war er auch wieder.

Roger Tullgren, 42, from Hässleholm in southern Sweden, has just got a new job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren‘s salary. This bizarre promotion, which urges consumers to ‘Feel the Romance of British Royalty’, has been splashed across billboards in China by a lingerie company called Jealousy International. And to mark the anniversary of Diana’s death on August 31, 1997 – caused by a road accident in Paris – the lingerie company unveiled the new range at Shenzhen airport in southern China. This summer I spent my vacation in China where I visited my family in law in the industrial city of Wenzhou. A bit bored during shopping I took this picture with my phone in a local mall (15 July ‘10 / shopping centre in Whenzhou) and posted it on the 0ch flickr account. Apparently my picture was picked up by some journalist who investigated the matter: Dailymail.co.uk . Sterretje (*–*), onze pusher van populaire pulpmuziek, neemt deel aan het nieuwe televisieprogramma Oh Oh Cherso en maakt alle verwachtingen omtrent zijn persoonlijkheid, voorkeuren en bezigheden waar. Sterretje, die in het echt Tony heet, is een echte Haagse jongen van de gestampte pot, ook al woont-ie tegenwoordig elders. Vanavond te zien op RTL5.

De enthousiasmerende tekst uit de promo smaakt naar meer: “In het programma worden acht jonge, stronteigenwijze ras-Hagenezen een zomer lang gevolgd. Ze delen lief en leed en feesten tot ze erbij neervallen. De cast bestaat uit eigenzinnige en typische Hagenezen die garant staan voor humor, verbazing, passie, ruzie en heel veel ongecompliceerd plezier. Tipgever ape valt helaas buiten de tipgeldregeling.

Vandaag is de Euromast door de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed aangewezen als rijksmonument. De uitzichttoren is met 185 m het hoogste rijksmonument van Nederland. De mast is ontworpen door architect Hugh Maaskant ter gelegenheid van de Floriade in 1960 en viert dit jaar zijn 50ste verjaardag. Gefeliciteerd!

Architect H.A. Maaskant streefde naar een tijdloze vormgeving van de toren die meerdere generaties zou aanspreken. Niet alleen de functie en de vorm, maar ook de innovatieve constructiemethode en bouwtechniek zijn van belang. Destijds was de 107 m hoge toren het hoogste bouwwerk van herrijzend Rotterdam.

In 1968 werd aan de Westzeedijk de Medische Faculteit gepland, waardoor werd gevreesd dat de in 1960 nog indrukwekkende hoogte van de Euromast de bezoeker niet blijvend zou imponeren. Daarom besloot de directie om een nieuwe attractie toe te voegen: de Space Tower. Deze stalen cilinder, met hier omheen een draaibare en spiraalsgewijs klimmende cabine werd in 1970 geplaatst. De bouw was opnieuw een technisch hoogstandje en bracht de totale hoogte op 185 meter. Sindsdien is de toren opnieuw het hoogste bouwwerk in Rotterdam en nu het hoogste rijksmonument van Nederland. Datuhetweet!

Er had ook een compleet andere Euromast kunnen staan. Een ander ontwerp was van architect J.B. Bakema. Hij ontwierp een 125 meter hoge uitzichttoren ter gelegenheid van de eerste Internationale Tuinbouwtentoonstelling Floriade, die in 1960 in Rotterdam werd georganiseerd. De toren gold als topstuk van de tentoonstelling. Het gemeentebestuur wilde een bouwwerk oprichten dat niet alleen uitzicht bood over de tijdelijke tentoonstelling in het Park, maar ook als blijvend monument de trots van de stad Rotterdam verbeeldde.

Bakema’s toren bestaat uit vier uitwaaierende cabines die op vier kolommen steunen en in balans gehouden worden door aluminium kabels. De cabines bieden uitzicht op verschillende bestuurlijke gebieden. Terwijl de bestuurders de problematiek van de haven, de stad en de regio zouden bespreken, konden ze gelijktijdig de betreffende gebieden observeren. Meer hierover bij de NAI.

Zoals alle 0chers beseffen, ontsnappen ook vagina’s niet aan de verjongings- en verfraaiingstrend. Eerst waren er de verschillende manieren om schaamhaar te scheren, dan volgde de operatie die de vagina strakker maakt, en nu is er de haarverf die de vagina terug die ‘frisse roze kleur’ moet geven. “My new pink button” heet de verf die in vier tinten komt. Hij staat hoog in de b00kentoptienen van de Bruna’s en de Librissen. Reden genoeg om ‘m te negeren zou je zeggen. Want als die bepalen wat een goed boek is, dan zou je zelfs Heleen van Rooyen een schrijfster moeten noemen! Ha! Maar de boeken van Stieg Larsson zijn erg goed imho, pageturners. Tientje bij de bolpuntcommen, voor een niet weg te leggen boek van 650 bladzijden (anderhalve cent per bladzijde!).

De Zweed Stieg Larsson ging in 2004 op z’n 50ste dood en liet drie complete detectiveromans achter. De triologie de Millenium-serie; The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire en The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. Die werden na z’n dood gepubliceerd en inmiddels zijn er wereldwijd meer dan 10 miljoen van z’n boeken verkocht en zijn twee van de drie boeken verfilmd. Retro as hell dus, deze post. Maar ik heb net één boek uit en was zwaar onder de indruk.

Mrs. Makeba

The last few years, I kept on seeing announcements that Miriam Makeba was to perform in town. Only, when I noticed the dates, it happened to have been last week. So I became slightly frustrated over the wish to take my mum along to see and especially hear that special woman she introduced me to.
Then finally last month, I saw she was performing again. In Paradiso, which was a plus, because the acoustics might be very well at the concertgebouw, and the grandeur matches the grandness of this lady, it remained an odd context for a woman of such importance for music and politics in music.
So after a fine African meal, we headed for the Paradiso. It was a surprise for my mum: she had never seen Miriam Makeba live before. So this was a good evening. A nice atmosphere and Miriam Makeba still with a beautiful voice in her seventies.
People in the audience kept on asking for Pata Pata, but I was nicely surprised by the songs I didn’t know yet. She ended her performance with an old skool a capella song, “sung by the young, from the days of old; because they have to know where they come from to know where they are going”.
After, we applauded. Some in the audience started clapping for a bis. I didn’t dare: she was 76! But heroine as she was: she gave an encore.
And then they lifted her in her wheelchair, I saw from the side of the balcony where we were seated.
So much more respect for her, that she still gave us this gift, her voice.
Monday morning the breakfast bulletin broke the news: Miriam Makeba is gone. I cried.
Thank you for your voice, Mrs. Makeba and what you did with it. She used to sing her old traditional South African songs, including the clickvowels, she sang about Patrice Lumumba, she sang about South Africa having to be as one. She sung Brazilian samba’s, she sung jazz, she sung West Indian ballads and calypso’s.
She finally crossed over.

So, after a quick baguette at Dubbeldik, where we spotted famous Eindhovians such as preachers Arnol and Theo and that bald guy from the city works who always empties the trash cans while smoking hefty cigars, we were off for the Dutch Design Awards at Strijp-S. But again, only admissible for people who know more than three ways to scroll through text messages on their iPones. Made me ponder about the gap between creativists such as Bob & Marcia or Erosie and board of director satisfiers who win Audi awards.

Me and marie have spend some time deep in the heart of Brittany, an empty godforsaken place. We’ve visited several sites such as The chaos of Huelgoat, Roc trevezel and the castle of Trevarez, in the mean time we tried to locate some of my favorite hidden locations of Menhir and dolmen.

So i was in the neighbourhood of Nantes (Rennes) last week and i thought i’d pay it a visit. I was happily suprised my fellow ochbloggers, i found a true treasure of future Jules Vernisme, never have i encountered a site more dedicated to self-inventing-machine-art-woodworking-welding and so forth in my life. Behold it takes time this idea, but if it gets the time it needs…… who knows!

It was in the last decade of the previous century when I experienced my musical coming of age. TUPTB Rap 2, Ill Communication, We Rock Hard, Homework, and Illadelph Halflife layed out the tracks and I only had to follow. However, something was missing. Something slick, something smooove. It turned out to be FUNK. Not as I knew it, but FUNK from the EIGHTIES…

It was when I stumbled upon a pack of eighties funky delights documented at Freestyle Grooves that I started traveling over various prehistoric peer-2-peer networks looking for those synth driven funky grooves with lushy bass and smooove lyrics. I quickly developed a strong liking for artists such as Cameo, Kleeer, Patrice Rushen, and Dexter Wansel. And The Fatback Band, not to forget.

Recently, I discovered that the Freestyle Grooves site is still up and running. So I visited some blogspots and made a compilation of the 14 + 1 funky delights reviewed by Ez. Excellent material to spice up any (candlelight) dinner around sunset on a hot and steamy summer night. May the FUNK be with you!

This weekend, Eindhoven is filled with young men and women clad in baggy trousers with tatood butts on ghetto bikes delivering goodies all over town during the European Cycle Messengers Championships 2008. Of course I had to check that out.

My first engagement with bike couriers was the 1994 documentary Need 4 Speed. Today I found out that actually not a lot has changed since then. However, the Zorba the Greek characters (see Pt. 2) have changed from lycra tights to full side burns and beards. Or might that just be an European thing? And it’s a pity that nobody picks up the X-Men theme (see Pt. 5) anymore. Oh, also check out this great spoof or pastiche of Ladri di Biciclette.

It’s not often that at the end of a brilliant concert nobody screams ‘we want more’. But after two and a half hours of My Morning Jacket in the Melkweg last tuesday I was full, couldn’t handle another song. One of the best concerts I ever saw!

The opening act was promising, Everest, with Jim James and Carl Broemel of MMJ joining them in one song. But at half past nine it went really los! MMJ started of with Evil Urges from their new album Evil Urges (Het gedicht Opvliegers uit de bundel ‘Opvliegers’) and from then on it was one highlight after another (Read Ear). At eleven a clock a small break, but within 3 minutes bandleader Jim James was back on his own with his guitar and a funny h00dje op. I thought: two toegifts and a big finale, and that’s that. But the band played for another full hour and after midnight we found ourselves outside the Milkyway under a small offroof, smoking, not saying anything, flabbergasted and with a pleasant peep in our ears.
