Op 5 maart ging er een schok door de wereld: Eddy Wally, de Eddy Wally, de fantastische, geweldige charmezanger Eddy Wally kreeg een beroerte. Al snel werd gevreesd voor zijn carrière, voor zijn leven. Maar dan kent men Eddy Wally niet.

“Sinds maandag 14 maart is er een positieve evolutie in de toestand van Eddy Wally. Nu kan hij op eigen kracht eten en drinken. Met steun kan hij op beide benen staan. De volgende stap is leren gaan. Daarna gaan de specialisten zich toeleggen op zijn linkerarm. Dit positieve resultaat is te wijten aan zijn moedige en volledige inzet tijdens de dagelijkse revalidatie.”

Vanavond allemaal Narb-en tijdens de Rotterdamse Museumnacht!

Narb.me is een webdienst van Tizzle waarmee je commentaar kan geven op kunst. Minder suf dan het klinkt.

Wie voor het eerst iemands huiskamer inloopt, bekijkt steevast de boeken- en cd-collectie van de bewoner. Vaak een aardige indicatie als je wilt weten wat voor vlees je in de kuip hebt. Die ervaring was voor boeken al digitaal met het razend populaire Shelfari. Met je smaak in kunst kun je nu online pronken op Narb.me.

De verplichte iPhone app is er ook al en geeft naast een kunstkalender de mogelijkheid een eigen ‘collectie’ aan te leggen van dingen die je mooi vindt. Ook kun je op de site je mening geven over tentoonstellingen.[via]

RFID tagging

I’m busy with a project at work where we use some RFID tags. We use them for a kind of fun and useful reason, in Mediamatic’s symbolic table, to give something ‘back’ for the stories we collect and to trigger reminiscing. The table is used in several senior homes where we gather with some inhabitants around the table and start watching some old movie fragments, activated by RFID tags in the movie stills cards that the seniors can choose from. Triggered by these old movies, these pioneers of inburgering tell us their stories about emigrating to Holland.
This innocent purpose is not normal in RFID-tagging, it seems. Some are still nice, some are practical but other adaptations are more verontrustend and others are downright scarying.

A few days ago the city of Arnhem was enriched with a stunningly beautiful and interesting store at the crossroads of art, fashion and design, called ‘Coming Soon: Arnhem’. The store’s goal is to offer young and talented Dutch designers a place to show their clothes (or others) among designers like for instance Orson + Bodil, Francisco van Benthum, Viktor & Rolf and Spijkers en Spijkers who already more or less made it in the world of design and fashion.

There’s also a large collection of Dutch hand-picked designproducts such as porcelain, accessories, gadgets, shoes, bags and rare magazines and books also designed and made by Dutch designers who are currently still bubbling under, but do have the capacity to become ‘huge’ in the very near future.
‘Coming Soon’ is initiated by the Arts Academy Arnhem, ArtEZ.

A while ago I celebrated my umptienth birthday and my house was filled with family and friends from afar and close.

From Ikiro I got two sets of flashing bicycleledlights and Beneger showed up with a so called vosim. For those of you who ever met him: he often brings something along with him that makes sound. (From now on that will be Balou). And then there was Choco who took a video of the bleep thingie.

This bleeping apparatus is an optically controllable vosim, a voice simulator, a simplistical optical vocal chord simulator.

The vosim looks like a lolbak but is really intended to be a musical instrument, an advanced application of oscillator sync. What that means exactly, I don’t know, being a real alpha, but it has to do something with converting light pulses into soundwaves. So the optical input is transformed into a simulation of the voice.
You see? This serious digital ernst.

The insides of the box are (kinda) connected like this:

Beneger built it all by himself, from scratch.

“From a musical point of view I like instruments that hover between electronics and voices. Thats why I made a vosim in a simple way. The sensors were bought by a friend of mine. I found the casing. The precision sawing took most of my time. Drilling has to be done slowly in metal. A Dremel doesn’t do the job, so I drill by hand. First little holes and then widening the [s]goatse[/s] gap. The making of a fitting rubber inside in the flight case took up a lot of time too. That one didn’t turn out to be very crafty, but quite safe”.

A really ambachtelijk gefixte thingie, and so lovely a thingie at it, too!

So, to continue the merelroze, we freaked around with the gadget a little, until I got the idea to use Ikiro’s gifts as a stimulus for the object. And whooh00t, did we get a feedback!
