Short punk vs long punk
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Saturday, August 12th, 2006 (9)
Long
In 1999, Nofx released a mini album called The Decline. Featuring just one song, with a length of 18 minutes and 23 seconds, it’s not your typical punkrock song. The Decline is a strong statement against the current state of affairs on the other side of the Atlantic, and is filled with great hooks, killer riffs, and lyrics that constitute a “fiery and pessimistic social commentary”.

Short
Nofx’ bassguitarist and singer Fat Mike is also owner of record label Fat Wreck Chords, on which a compilation album also was released that year, called Short Music for Short People. This album features 99 songs from 99 different bands (featuring bands like Poison Idea, Bad Religion, The Living End, Green Day, Screeching Weasel, Black Flag, and obviously a lot more), and every song is approximately 30 seconds long. Enjoy!
Airplane

Since there seems to be some fuss about airplanes and terrorists, here’s some clips from the movie Airplane:
clip1, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, clip3, clip4
Update: voor Tim K. (bedankt 76!)
Update 2: Other great Airplane movies are Langoliers and Nightmare at 20,000 feet.
Id
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Tuesday, August 1st, 2006 (6)
Ongekendtalent.nl, a dutch website promoting dutch pop music, has elected Id band of the week. Id is a band from Leiden, Netherlands, are good friends of mine and make excellent pop/rock music, featuring “fraaie zanglijnen en koortjes”. And also “veel dynamiek, zowel ritmisch als harmonisch en een prachtige opbouw.” (sorry, hard to translate dutch stuff, but take it from me, it means they are pretty good). So, if you like them, you might want to give them some extra votes here (you can listen and vote for the songs on the right side of the screen).
More songs and info can be found here.
Or here, under Luister.
You’re pitiful
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Thursday, June 15th, 2006 (14)Never had a date
That you couldnt inflate
And you smell repulsive, too
What a bummer bein you
Well you just cant dance
And forget romance
Everybody you know still calls ya
Farty pants
But youll always have a job
Well, I mean
As long as you still can work that Slurpie machine

Bambix – Out of the cradle (Endlessly Rocking)
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 (11)
“Bambix have been playin before Green Day got cool. They played Brasil 3 times and are proud to be real rockstars there with MTV coverage for over 30 million people. Can say they are real friends with cool bands. Played big festivals, like Deconstruction, Dynamo, Rostock and minor toilets like the one at the Bijstand.” OK, that’s the bio, my viewpoint: simply the best punkrock band the Netherlands ever produced. Bambix just released a new record on Daemon records (run by the Indigo Girls). Of course that’s cool, but today we’ll start at the beginning, and that’s their first record, when Bambix was still an all-girl band. Published in 1992 by (now defunct) dutch label Gap Recordings, Out of the Cradle (Endlessly rocking) made quite an impact on me. So here’s a teaser, and here’s the full album on Rapidshare.

Parecon
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Tuesday, June 13th, 2006 (1)“Participatory Economics (Parecon for short) is a type of economy proposed as an alternative to contemporary capitalism. The underlying values are equity, solidarity, diversity, and participatory self management. The main institutions are workers and consumers councils utilizing self managed decision making, balanced job complexes, remuneration according to effort and sacrifice, and participatory planning.” Communism and capitalism obviously have their flaws, so it’s time to take a look at other options!
LowLands Lovestory
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Thursday, June 8th, 2006 (18)With the Lowlands festival coming up, i think it’s nice to to post a real romantic LowLands love story (scroll down to “Hotel De Botel”. And it’s dutch, for a translation click).
Thanks to Danny.

The Muffs
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Friday, April 14th, 2006 (6)
In 1993 The Muffs
released their (self titled) first full length record. With the lovely Kim Shattuck on
vocals and guitar, the Muffs make (punk)rock with supermelodic hooklines and an occasional scream from Kim. This record I consider their best, because actually
every song on this record is just filled with great hooks, singalong melodies and some screams from Kim.
Teaser: From your girl.
Check ‘em out on Snelverdeel.

Nada Surf in Tivoli
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Friday, March 31st, 2006 (6)
Yesterday Nada Surf played a show in Tivoli, Utrecht. Although I didn’t know the band very well (I accompanied a friend who’s a long time fan), I had a great time. Sound quality was very good, and even though they were with 3, they made quite some noise
.

Bruce Springsteen – Live at the Hammersmith Odeon (London, 1975)
Written by Sergeant_Baker on Wednesday, March 29th, 2006 (37)
On their first european tour, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, on November 18, 1975. The whole show had been recorded on video and audio (24 track), and the original tapes were almost forgotten. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Springsteen pinnacle third record, “Born to Run”, the old audio tapes of the legendary London show were dusted off and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. On top of that, the video recordings were digitally restored, and the whole two hour show of that evening was added as a DVD. Miraculously, it ended up somewhere on the Internet, and guess what. I found it.
So here you go, Bruce Spingsteen, live at the Hammersmith Odeon, on Demonoid Isohunt.
As a bonus, here’s the audio (mp3, 320 KBPS) of the same show, on Demonoid.
Here’s a teaser (mp3).

Written by Sergeant_Baker on Tuesday, March 7th, 2006 (8)
Moeten we ons zorgen maken? Veel mensen doen dat wel. Dat is logisch. Want ook in Nederland kan slecht weer plaatsvinden.

Written by Sergeant_Baker on Monday, February 20th, 2006 (3)
My late, late, late contribution to Oldschoolpunkweek (ok, better call it Oldschoolpunkyear for me) is the first record of Oakland, California based band Neurosis, called Pain of Mind. Although they changed their music style with virtually every album they released, this album features “simple” and medium to fast hardcore songs. Originally released in 1988 on Alchemy Records (on vinyl, which I own of course because), the version you can download here is a (CD) reissue with a different cover.
Also check out this great blog with a lot more classic old punkrock/hardcore: http://somethingilearned.blogspot.com/
