Eurosonic: Friday

Fusedmarc (Het Parlement)
It is not often that, in the history of Eurosonic, a band from Lithuania makes their appearance. And if Fusedmarc is a sample of what is happening in this country nowadays, then we may only hope that more bands from this region will make the step forward. Fusedmarc makes exciting electronic multimedia music. Shame though that the visuals, which are an import element of the gig, was nested near the stage. But the music stood as a house, somewhat dark electronics with the voice of Cilia more used as instrument. Billed as “one of the most interesting musical projects in Baltic States” they make up for that completely. Not signed at the moment, but that will not take long after this gig at Eurosonic. Highly recommended for the electronic music lovers among us.

Dez Mona (Newscafé)
Close your eyes and you’re standing in a smokey jazzcorner with the new jazz diva singing for you. Open your eyes and you see 5 guys playing. This is music the pure way, emotional but still holding that smooth feeling. The voice of Gregory Frateur blends perfect with the dark gypsy jazz sounds. One of the pearls out of Belgium!

Mugison (Huis ‘De Beurs’)
The next artist, the icelandic Mugison, reaps also from the pure music fields. This time not the jazz, but the blues. And Mugison and his “grandpa” know how to entertain the public. With very funny intermezzo’s the gig is something special. The blues goes through all of your body and the good planned jokes makes this another winner on our Eurosonic route. In one word: brilliant!

Little Cow (Stadsschouwburg)
Originally we planned Cult of Luna after the Mugison gig, but the queue at VERA was the reason we changed our route a bit and went straight to the Stadsschouwburg venue for a klezmerrock injection. The concept is simple. You put an band from the balkan on stage and after a song or two the audience is dancing and smiling. Little Cow is no exception, klezmerrock at its best! (audio)

Halves (Shadrak, Floor Up)
Postrock with a little twist. The resemblances with Sigur Ros are clear. But that is not an problem at all. Although sometimes the band makes little mistakes in the coordination, this is compensated with the variety of the gig. The use of classical instruments within the postrock genre is not new, but it works well for Halves. This band can only get better!

Chrome Hoof (VERA)
The last act of a fully crammed Eurosonic route is Chrome Hoof. Imagine Cradle of Filth playing at the Rio Carnival. The black voodoo funk metal of Chrome Hoof is a weird duck in the bite. A lot of people can’t handle this type of music: too metal for some, too funky for the other. This is for the people who have a broad taste in music with a hang to the heavy site. How the concept is translated to cd is for me a big question, but live it rocks! A trully worthy closing act of our Eurosonic route! (audio)

Conclusion
This year Eurosonic is for me personally the best Eurosonic I’ve encountered the last three years. Besides two ladies to dream about, a lot of bands triggered my interest for checking them out further. Is it that the average quality of the acts has risen or did we just have plain good luck for checking the essential gigs? I don’t know, but what I know if Eurosonic is a degree meter for the coming music year, 2008 will turn out a year to be remembered!

BTW: For people who’ll joining Eurosonic next year. Drop a line and I will sent you a message when the tickets are available! ;)
