Meanwhile the girlie with the strange, somewhat pinched off, alien-esque voice Roisin Murphy went solo, but back in 1995 she and Mark Brydon raised Moloko. The two met at a party in Sheffield where Roisin introduced herself and fancied Mark with ”Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body”. Well, he did and one year later their first CD was a fact.
Former acid-jazzproducer Mark Brydon arranged an album while the triphop-hype was at its peak. In fact Moloko didn’t do triphop – whatever it may be – at all, but for convenience’s sake it was filed under it by most of the critics.

This debut-album travels around the darkrooms of breakbeat, funk and disco, covered up with danceable basses, the beautiful voice of Roisin and some nasty electronics (check out Killa Bunnies!). The songstructures are full of adventure and every now and then pretty weird too, as if they drank too much of the moloko (the ‘milk’ in Stanley Kubricks classic movie A Clockwork Orange, which in fact is some sort of drug).
The album brought up classic Moloko-songs as ‘Where Is The What If The What Is In Why?’, ‘Day For Night’ and of course clubhit ‘Fun For Me’, which also made it to the Batman & Robin soundtrack.
Yes we did like her tight sweater and yes it’s an album you can’t refuse!

Ik ken eigenlijk alleen de grote [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_It_Back]hit[/url] en het album [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statues_(album)]Statues[/url] (waar ik trouwens oprecht van houd). Misschien is het wel eens tijd om dit album ook eens te gaan luisteren.

[img]http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/3240/roisinyj6.gif[/img]Goeie plaat dit! Het klinkt wel ‘anders’ als je alleen maar de single-versie van ‘Sing it back’ kent. Het is hier nog duidelijk een eenmansproject-met-zangeres en de meeste geluiden komen uit een doosje wat het soms wel erg klinisch maakt; op latere CD’s zijn er veel meer “echte instrumenten”.
Ik weet niet of het met mp3’s ook gaat werken, maar op het hoesje staat een verhaal dat de boel zo geproduceerd is dat je een quadrofonisch effect zou horen als je 2 CD’s synchroon afspeelt op twee verschillende installaties. Ik heb het zelf nooit geprobeerd, weet dus niet of het bull is, maar dat is wat ze zeggen..
